| HOW WE GOT INTO CURLIES... We started our marriage with a "blended family" of his (Bozley, an American Water Spaniel), mine (Bailey, a Golden Retriever/Lab mix), and then we got ours (Brittany, a Yellow Lab mix from the local shelter). For 5 years, this was our family, these were our kids. Bozley passed away shortly before our first human child (Tyler) was born, and Bailey passed away shortly after our second (Devin) was born. As Brittany aged, we found it was time to augment our family with another dog, so we would never be without any. Boz had been such a faithful and willing companion that we began our research with the AWS. We extended that for size and went to meet some Irish Water Spaniels. So far, it hadn't "clicked". Then Steve found a breed on the internet that was "liver & curly, in the retriever family". After some phone calls, we learned (fortuitously!) that there was a litter planned in our area. We drove across town, and had the most enjoyable visit with these two wonderful Curlies who enjoy being both steady hunting companions and live-in pets for their humans. They barked appropriately at the doorbell, yet were completely at ease & trustworthy around our kids; they were comical, attention-getting, lap-sitting, studious, curious, intelligent.... it CLICKED, and they would be perfect as members of our family. We waited anxiously for the litter, and visited almost every week to play with them. Eleven puppies: 6 boys (3 of each color), 5 girls. We decided on the Liver girl, and took our little "coffee bean" home. |
